Ramadan - Episode 12

***********************************

In The Shade of Ramadan ~ Season 2

***********************************

Episode 12 - Love of Allah
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lyQrqpAIBko)

******************************

Surah Al-Imran

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

"Say (O Muhammad SAW to mankind): "If you (really) love Allâh then follow me (i.e. accept Islâmic Monotheism, follow the Qur'ân and the Sunnah), Allâh will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allâh is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful." (3:31)

HADITH

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said,

"The strong man is not the one who wrestles, but the strong man is in fact the one who controls himself in a fit of rage.''

[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

Commentary:

People are usually impressed by the physical power and strength of somebody. But the real strength of a man lies in the fact that he should be able to wrestle with his passions in a fit of anger and avoid committing an act for which he may subsequently regret.

This is a common observation that wild anger leads to many a wrongdoing of which man repents later on or sheds tears over the ruin resulting from it.

In The Shade of Ramadan ~ Season 2

***********************************

Episode 11 - Fear of Allah
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHsnSY5O4uA)

~ Br. Bilal Kaleem talks about Fear of Allah

******************************

Surah Al-Anfal (8)

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

O you who believe! If you obey and fear Allâh, He will grant you Furqân [(a criterion to judge between right and wrong), or (Makhraj, i.e. a way for you to get out from every difficulty)], and will expiate for you your sins, and forgive you; and Allâh is the Owner of the Great Bounty. (8:29)

*****************************

HADITH

Anas (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said:

"Three (things) follow a dead person: Members of his family, his property and his deeds. Two of them return; and one remains with him. The people and his wealth return; his deeds remain with him".

[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

Commentary:

This Hadith has a warning for the Muslims that they should adopt the way of piety and fear (of Allah), not of sin and impiety because those are actions which will go with him to the grave and which decide his fate in the life after death.

If he carries with him good deeds, he will have a comfortable sojourn in Barzakh (the intervening stage between death and Resurrection).

On the contrary, if the record of his life is devoid of good deeds, all the wealth that he leaves behind, even if it is beyond calculation, will be of no avail to him because what he will be having with him will be the bad deeds which he performed during his life. These bad deeds will be a constant source of torture for him during his stay in Barzakh.

Episode 10 -Remembrance of Allah
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZ9qJFgLRXY)

~ Bro. Omar Abdala talks about Remembrance of Allah

******************************

AL-QURAN : Al-Imran (190 - 191)

"Verily! In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and in the alternation of night and day, there are indeed signs for men of understanding". (190)

"Those who remember Allâh (always, and in prayers) standing, sitting, and lying down on their sides, and think deeply about the creation of the heavens and the earth, (saying): "Our Lord! You have not created (all) this without purpose, glory to You! (Exalted are You above all that they associate with You as partners). Give us salvation from the torment of the Fire." (191)

HADITH

Anas bin Malik (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Messenger of Allah (PBUH) delivered a Khutbah to us the like of which I had never heard from him before. In the course of the Khutbah, he said: "If you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep much". Thereupon those present covered their faces and began to sob.

[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

Commentary:

This Hadith has been mentioned in this chapter for the reason that it furnishes positive proof of the fact that the Companions of the Prophet (PBUH) used to weep out of fear of Allah when they heard sermons and preachings. It induces us to follow them.

Episode 9 - Worshiping Allah
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VeUqfnlHnsM)

~ Dr. Souhail talks about Worshiping Allah

****************************

"For, believers are those who, when Allah is mentioned, feel a tremor in their hearts, and when they hear His signs rehearsed, find their faith strengthened, and put (all) their trust in their Lord." [Al-Anfal (8) : 2]

HADITH :

Anas (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said,

"Whoever says (upon leaving his house): `Bismillah, tawakkaltu `alallah, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah [I begin with the Name of Allah; I trust in Allah; there is no altering of conditions but by the Power of Allah],' it will be said to him: 'You are guided, defended and protected.' The devil will go far away from him".

[Abu Dawud, At-Tirmidhi and An-Nasa'i].

Abu Dawud reported it with this addition: "One devil will say to another: 'How can you deal with a man who has been guided, defended and protected?".

Commentary:

The prayer quoted in this Hadith shows the importance of confidence and trust in Allah and request for security against the mischief of Satan.

Ramadan - Episode 8

*********************************

In The Shade of Ramadan - Season 2

*********************************

Episode 8 - Managing Time
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4wsyqvvE84)

~ Managing time.

*****************************

Ibn Abbas (May Allah be pleased with them) said: One day, I was riding behind the Prophet (PBUH) when he said,

"O boy! I will instruct you in some matters. Be watchful of Allah (Commandments of Allah), He will preserve you. Safeguard His Rights, He will be ever with you. If you beg, beg of Him Alone; and if you need assistance, supplicate to Allah Alone for help. And remember that if all the people gather to benefit you, they will not be able to benefit you except that which Allah had foreordained (for you); and if all of them gather to do harm to you, they will not be able to afflict you with anything other than that which Allah had pre-destined against you. The pens had been lifted and the ink had dried up".

[At-Tirmidhi].

Another narration is: Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said,

"Safeguard the Commandments of Allah, you will find Him before you. Remember Him in prosperity and He will remember you in adversity. Be sure that which you miss, was not to hit you; and what hits you, was never to miss you. Remember that the Help of Allah is obtained with patience, and relief emerges after distress, prosperity follows adversity, and hardship is followed by ease".

Commentary:

1. No one has the power to change the Decision of Allah.

2. Whatever trouble one has to suffer in this world, it does not last for ever. Every trouble is followed by prosperity, pleasure and happiness.

3. One should never ask other than Allah, anyone's help in supernatural way because it amounts to ascribing partnership with Allah. If a person is mindful of the Rights of Allah, then Allah in return takes care of his needs and helps him.

Ramadan - Episode 7

*********************************

In The Shade of Ramadan - Season 2

*********************************

7 - Awareness of Allah
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1NiwmJHtOE)

~ Sister Muslema Purmul tells a wonderful story of one of the heroes of Islam and how he maintained his awareness of Allah.

************************************

'Umar bin Al-Khattab (May Allah be pleased with them) said: Once we were sitting in the company of Messenger of Allah (Peace Be Upon Him) when there appeared a man dressed in very white clothes and having extraordinary black hair. No signs of fatigue of journey appeared on him and he was known to none of us.

He sat down facing the Prophet (PBUH) leaning his knees against the knees of the Prophet (PBUH) and placing both of his palms over his two thighs and said, "O Muhammad (PBUH)! Tell me about Islam".

He (PBUH)replied, "Islam is to testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and that Muhammad (PBUH) is the Messenger of Allah; that you observe Salat (prayers), pay Zakat, observe Saum (fasting) of Ramadan and perform Hajj (pilgrimage) of the House, provided you have resources of making journey to it.''

He replied: "You have spoken the truth". We were surprised to see that he had asked him and confirmed the correctness of the answers.

He then enquired: "Tell me about Iman".

He (PBUH) said. "It is to believe in Allah, and His Books, and His Messengers and the Last Day and that you believe in foreordainment, its bad and good consequences.''

He said, "You have spoken the truth.''

He then enquired: "Tell me about Ihsan.''

He (PBUH) said, "It is to worship Allah as if you are seeing Him; and although you do not see Him, He sees you".

He enquired: "Inform me about the Hour (i.e., the Day of Resurrection)".

He (PBUH) replied, "I have no more knowledge thereof than you".

He said, "Inform me about some of its signs".

He (PBUH) said, "They are - that a bondswoman gives birth to her own master, and that you will find the barefooted, naked, poor shepherds competing one another in the construction of higher buildings".

Then he departed.

The Messenger of Allah kept silent for a while then he said to me, "O `Umar! Do you know who the questioner was?''

I replied, "Allah and His Messenger know better".

The Prophet (PBUH) said, "He was Jibril (Gabriel); he came to you to teach you your religion".

[Sahih Muslim].

Commentary:

This Hadith is known as 'Hadith Jibril'. It mentions the basics of Islam the details of which are known to every Muslim. Al-Qadr (Divine foreordainment) means that Allah already knows and had recorded everything that will happen until the Day of Resurrection.

Now whatever happens is in accordance with that knowledge and writing. What is meant by its good and bad consequences can be illustrated by saying that tranquillity, prosperity and abundance of crops come in the category of good consequences. Famine, calamities and troubles, etc., fall in the list as evil consequences.

But we regard them good or bad according to our own understanding; otherwise, every action of Allah has some wisdom and expedience which are known to Him Alone.

Ramadan - Episode 6

***********************************

In The Shade of Ramadan ~ Season 2

***********************************

Episode 6 - Happiness & Contentment
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1J53QDKHn0)

~ Dr. Imad Bayoun discusses the concept of contentment in Islam.
He talks about how to find happiness
and be content with what we have.

******************************

Amr bin Taghlib (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Some booty or prisoners of war were brought to Messenger of Allah (PBUH) and he distributed them, giving some men and neglecting others. Then, he was informed that those whom he had not given a thing were displeased.

On this the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) praised Allah and glorified Him and said, "It is a fact that I give to one and overlook another. The one I ignore is dearer to me than the one I give. I give to those in whose hearts I perceive anxiety; others I leave with the richness and contentment that Allah has put in their hearts. One of them is `Amr bin Taghlib.''

Upon this `Amr bin Taghlib said, "By Allah I shall not accept a herd of red camels in exchange for what the Prophet said (about me).''

[Al-Bukhari].

Commentary:

Whatever voluntary gifts or the spoils of war were brought to Messenger of Allah (PBUH), he divided them out to the Companions. In distribution, he weighed different considerations in his mind and the beneficiaries were categorized into three groups: the needy, the deserving cases and those whose hearts were to be won over.

His primary concern, however, was to make donations to only those people about whom he had apprehensions that, if ignored, they would display impatience and weakness. In this way the reliable and contented type of men were intentionally ignored.

The superiority of `Amr bin Taghlib (May Allah be pleased with him) is determined by the fact that the Prophet (PBUH) counted him among the latter, and he rightly took it as a great honour for him.

Hence, we conclude that a ruler enjoys powers of expediency with regard to doling out from the public treasury. Yet, he is supposed to carry into practice what is implied by piety, integrity and trustworthiness. He must not be subordinate to self interests.

Episode 5 -The manners of Jumaa
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELEmqBtqsz8)

~ Bro. Omar Abdala talks about the manners of Jumaa

***************************

Allah, the Exalted, says:

"Worship Allâh and join none with Him (in worship), and do good to parents, kinsfolk, orphans, Al-Masâkin (the poor), the neighbour who is near of kin, the neighbour who is a stranger, the companion by your side, the wayfarer (you meet), and those (slaves) whom your right hands possess. Verily, Allâh does not like such as are proud and boastful" (An-Nisa' (4):36)

****************************

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (PBUH) said,

"By Allah, he is not a believer! By Allah, he is not a believer! By Allah, he is not a believer.''

It was asked, "Who is that, O Messenger of Allah?''

He (p.b.u.h) said, "One whose neighbour does not feel safe from his evil".
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

Another narration of Muslim is: Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "He will not enter Jannah whose neighbour is not secure from his wrongful conduct".

Commentary:

This Hadith reveals that hurting or troubling a neighbour is such a serious offence that it causes Allah's Wrath, and thus punishment in Hell.

***********************************

Episode 4 -The Adab of Visits
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=szDQ_JSRivE)

~ Br. Bilal Kaleem talks about the Adab of visits.

*****************************

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (PBUH) said,

"A man set out to visit a brother (in Faith) in another town and Allah sent an angel on his way. When the man met the angel, the latter asked him, "Where do you intend to go?'' He said, "I intend to visit my brother in this town.''

The angel said, "Have you done any favour to him?'' He said, "No, I have no desire except to visit him because I love him for the sake of Allah, the Exalted, and Glorious.''

Thereupon the angel said, "I am a messenger to you from Allah (to inform you) that Allah loves you as you love him (for His sake)"

[Sahih Muslim].

Commentary:

This Hadith points out the following:

1. The great merit of visiting Muslims for Allah's sake.

2. The bond of brotherhood in Islam is much stronger than the bonds of blood relationship and worldly interests and, therefore, comes before them in preference.

3. Whoever loves someone for Allah's sake, Allah will love him in a manner that suits His Majesty.

Narated By Abu Huraira : Prophet Muhammad (Peace and blessings be upon him) said,

"Allah said, 'All the deeds of Adam's sons (people) are for them, except fasting which is for Me, and I will give the reward for it.' Fasting is a shield or protection from the fire and from committing sins. If one of you is fasting, he should avoid sexual relation with his wife and quarrelling, and if somebody should fight or quarrel with him, he should say, 'I am fasting.'

The Prophet added, "By Him in Whose Hands my soul is' The unpleasant smell coming out from the mouth of a fasting person is better in the sight of Allah than the smell of musk. There are two pleasures for the fasting person, one at the time of breaking his fast, and the other at the time when he will meet his Lord; then he will be pleased because of his fasting."

Breaking Fast with Dates.

From :

Breaking the fast with dates is a Ramadan tradition, as most of its benefits are unique to this particular fast. Breaking one’s fast with dates, as well as praying before iftar, are both mentioned in the Hadith literature: "The Messenger of Allah would break his fast with ripe dates before he would pray. If those were not available, he would eat dried dates. If those were not available, he would drink some water.”

One of the many physical benefits of breaking the fast with dates is that our body benefits from the date’s high level of natural sugars. Sugars travel most quickly to the liver, where they are converted into energy more quickly than any other nutrient.

Muslims have an immediate need for this energy when they break their fast, for they need energy to perform their sunset prayers. Ironically, one also needs this energy to consume the iftar meal. When a person eats, the body uses energy to digest the food.

Eating large quantities of food immediately after fasting is not healthy for the body, which is in a weakened condition. Eating a date first helps the body start its digestive process and gives it the energy to deal with the secondary, more complex foods, eaten during ifta.

Dates are also high in vitamins A and B6, folic acid, potassium, natural sodium, iron, and magnesium. Thus, eating dates daily during Ramadan is like taking a daily multivitamin. This daily multivitamin can create a stronger and healthier body, one more fit for fasting.

Dates also contain large amounts of dietary fiber, which can prevent any constipation that might result from eating the traditionally rich foods served during Ramadan. Additionally, dates protect the stomach and intestinal tract from parasites and bacteria, and thus is a good preventative medicine when eating iftar at unfamiliar locations.

Dates also have a special place in Islam. In fact, they were one of the Prophet’s (SAW) most frequently consumed foods. For this reason, their benefit is most likely spiritual as well as physical. If their benefit were purely physical, one could perhaps consume any fruit high in natural sugars before iftar to gain similar benefits.

However, the act of following the Prophet’s (SAW) tradition is one way of connecting and remembering him, which is spiritually beneficial for Muslims.

One should pray after eating dates and before eating the main meal, because this short break gives the body time to metabolize the dates and water that have been consumed and to start the body’s digestive processes, which have been resting all day.

Eating large amounts of food immediately after breaking the fast resembles starting a car and the driving it without giving it enough time to warm up. As we know, this can damage the engine’s internal mechanics.

The same is true with the body, for jumpstarting the body’s digestive processes can shock the entire organ system. In some cases, this shock could be dangerous. In most cases, however, it is simply an unhealthy way to break the fast.

The immediate dangers are apparent in the increased need to sleep after the iftar. This sleepy feeling comes about because the body has expended so much energy on the digestive system that it needs to lower its other bodily functions in order to perform its digestive duties properly. Over time, this habit can cause long-term damage to the body.

Sheikh Abdul Rahman Al-Sudais

Muslims in Britain throng to hear Sudais

By Mozammel Haque
(excerpt from : Saudi Gazette ~ 10/08/09)

LONDON – Unity was the focus of Sheikh Abdul Rahman Al-Sudais, Imam and Khateeb of the Grand Mosque in Makkah, in his message to leaders of various Islamic organizations Friday evening at the Regents Park Central Mosque.

The Imam, famous for his beautiful recitation of the Qur’an, urged Muslim leaders to hold regular meetings to exchange ideas between them. He expressed hope that the coming Ramadan will be an occasion to bring people together.

He congratulated Muslim organizations for their efforts towards Muslims in Britain.
“The news of your excellent work reaches us over there in the Land of the Two Holy Mosques,” he said.

*****************************

While launching the second expansion of the East London Mosque, Al-Sudais gave a brief speech that can be summarized in 10 points to nearly 5,000 listeners.

1. He spoke about Tawheed (the Oneness and Uniqueness of Allah in His Lordship, His Names and Attributes and His Divinity) and the importance of following the Qur’an and Sunnah. He said, as mentioned in the Qur’an, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was sent as a role model and a mercy for the whole creation.

2. He reminded Muslims that they are an Ummah of Akhlaq (good character). They must cooperate and help each other in righteousness, and not in sin and aggression. Such cooperation should be with Muslims as well as non-Muslims and this is part of the Islamic character. He said Muslims should always be peaceful with all human beings.

3. Islam is a religion of the middle path. He recalled how the Prophet (peace be upon him) would visit the Jews and look after his neighbors.

4. Muslims should be united, he said. And this unity should be on the basis of the Book of Allah (Qur’an) and the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace be upon him).

5. Muslims are an Ummah of knowledge, he said referring to the importance Islam has placed on education and learning.

6. He mentioned about upholding family ties and bringing up children well. The importance of hijab and the dignity of women was also addressed.

7. Al-Sudais called for Tarbiyyat As-Sahih – imparting and nurturing others on correct teachings.

8. Islam is a religion of Da’wah and Muslims are an Ummah that gives Da’wah toward Allah. People should be invited to Allah with wisdom. He said we are not an Ummah of terrorism and that we should call people to the truth.

9. The Imam stressed on being respectful to parents and also on protecting and safeguarding children’s rights. Children should be given proper education, he said.

10. Sheikh Sudais, lastly, said Muslims were also an Ummah that repents to Allah. He said Ramadan was fast approaching, which is a month of Tawbah (repentance) and seeking forgiveness. He advised everyone to repent to Allah for their sins.

A Deed Few People Practice

Abdullah ibn 'Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet Muhammad(peace and blessings be upon him) said,

“There are two characteristics that whenever the Muslim maintains them will enter Jannah. These two traits are easy to possess. However, only a few people acquire them.

Say “ Subhanallah” ten times, “Al-Hamduillah” ten times and “Allahu Akbar” ten times at the end of each Salah. By practicing this deed you earn one hundred and fifty rewards for your tongue and one thousand five hundred for the scale (of good deeds).

And before you go to sleep say “Subhanallah” thirty three times, Al-Hamdulilah” thirty three times and Allahu Akbar thirty four times. By saying these words before you sleep you gain one hundred good deeds for your tongue and one thousand deeds for the scale.

The companions asked” Oh messenger, How is that these deeds are easy, yet few people do them?

The Prophet(peace be upon him) said,” Right after a person finishes praying Shaitan comes to him and reminds him of something that he has to do. Therefore this person gets up and leaves without saying these words. Additionally, when he lies in his bed Shaitan comes to him and causes him to fall asleep before he mentions these words.

‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr(may Allah be pleased with him)said , “ I saw the Messenger of Allah(May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him)say these words using his hand to count them.

(Collected by Abu Dawud(5065), At-Tirmithi( 3410)Nisa’i(926)and Ahmed(2/205) Imam An-Nawwawee graded the isnad of this hadeeth as being Saheeh and Imam At-Tirmithi said this hadeeth is Hasan Saheeh.)

Benefits derived from this hadeeth:

~ The invocation and the mention of Allah’s names are a means for the servant to enter Jannah.

~ Good deeds are multiplied by ten or more.

~ The scale is a fact.

~ Counting the glorification of Allah is done using the hands.

~ Shaitan is persistent with his whispers to the son of Adam during prayer and at bed time.

(end of Explanation)

We ask Allah to extend His mercy and allow us to practice this deed daily.
